Martin Luther King Day

Martin Luther King press conference 01269u edit.jpgEvery January people in the United States of America enjoy a national holiday to celebrate Martin Luther King's birthday

Martin Luther King was an activist and spokesman in the Civil Rights Movement during the 1950s and 1960s. He protested against racial discrimination in the USA. It was very difficult for black people in the USA at that time, as there were lots of racial and social problems.

Segregation of black and white people was the law in the South and other parts of America and Martin Luther King became very famous for his peaceful protests against this situation. His birthday is on the 15th of January, but Martin Luther King's day isn't always on this day. The holiday is always on the third Monday of January. This year is the 18th of January.

Martin Luther King's most famous speech is called "I have a dream". He gave this speech on the 28th of August 1963 in front of more than 250.000 civil rights supporters. It is one of the most famous and recognised speeches ever.

Nowadays, to celebrate Martin Luther King's day people try to help others by donating their free time. Some people help`the poor or go to special services dedicated to remembering this very brave and important man.

26/11/2015 THANKSGIVING'S DAY

WHEN DO WE CELEBRATE THANKSGIVING'S DAY?

Thanksgiving Day is the fourth Thursday in November, but many Americans take a day of vacation on the following Friday to make a four-day weekend, during which they may travel long distances to visit family and friends.

WHY DO WE CELEBRATE THANKSGIVING'S DAY?

The holiday dates back to 1621, the year after the Puritans arrived in Massachusetts, determined to practice their dissenting religion without interference. After a rough winter, in which about half of them died, they turned for help to neighboring Indians, who taught them how to plant corn and other crops. The next fall's bountiful harvest inspired the Pilgrims to give thanks by holding a feast.
The Thanksgiving feast became a national tradition — not only because so many other Americans have found prosperity but also because the Pilgrims' sacrifices for their freedom still captivate the imagination.

HOW DO AMERICANS CELEBRATE THANKSGIVING'S DAY?

To this day, Thanksgiving dinner almost always includes some of the foods served at the first feast: roast turkey, cranberry sauce, potatoes, pumpkin pie. Before the meal begins, families or friends usually pause to give thanks for their blessings, including the joy of being united for the occasion.
